Carstair’s muse on Gidget, dominatrix of the North

Sarah Palin, through the Toast Crumbs Dimly

Liberals and leftists, theoretically at least, have more common national interests with red state heartland white working class Americans than any other current political group. And the way to communicate that is NOT sneering at the only candidate who resembles ordinary Americans, their beliefs and lifestyle. When we do that, the Republicans grin like Cheshire cats, our global financial oppressors turn the screws down a bit harder, and the Devil takes a nap, because his work is done for him by fools using the most efficient tools available — arrogance and hubris.

Bright, sophisticated urban denizens continue to belittle Palin for her religion, her folksy mannerisms, her rambling interview clips and perceived naivety on global affairs. Even I (a wannabe smart internet voice) have posted bits of her recent public displays of silliness. And I will continue to question if she has conducted her political office in an ethical way or has been honest in her campaign trail statements.

But like McCain’s sneering and contemptuous behavior toward Obama in last week’s debate, there has been a great deal of meanness and ugliness directed at Palin by Obama supporters. It’s alright to ask of her suitability or demand she answer to legitimate voter queries. It’s OK to examine her honesty. However, opponents calling her stupid and flaunting their intellectual superiority merely refuels the Republican ticket. Since the days of Nixon, it’s Republican strategy 101. Pit the common folk against the eggheads and ivory tower educated idiots who know nothing of an honest day’s work. And there’s more of them working folks, especially accounting for electoral college mechanics, than those educated elites in the coastal cities.

Additionally, it plays right into the “culture war” meme. Instead, Obama champions should be seeking common ground with so called red state voters. Bush’s policies have whacked those voters just as hard as citizens on the other side of the political ledger. Granted, there should be no leeway proffered for hate mongers and closeted racists. But if we’re going to move forward into the 21st century, we need a majority of support, and that means a portion of those presently ill-disposed to an Obama presidency.
