Naum, I agree with you on the grounds that we could consider conception that moment when the decision is made to attempt creating life. That whole sperm and egg connection thing is the first big peak to climb followed by the first trimester which most people won’t even announce a pregnancy until the attempt at life is successful to this time frame. Where life begins will likely always be in question but one question where the answer is blatently clear is if life created out of a violent coercive act should have a means to an end. What if the creation of life through a violent act creates another predator? Women who do decide to abort on grounds other than this have to live with the consequences. Guys should have a say in the matter unless it is a coercive situation which again, if the woman lies, that is on her conscious along with making the decision based on any other selfish motives. If you don’t agree with this then pray to return in the next lifetime as a woman in a world devoid of violence.
Even though I disagree with you on this MAJOR issue, I will continue to follow because of all the other knowledge you bring to the table. Should you run for office though I would absolutely not vote for you base on that one difference.
Being in the middle of this heated debate means you will be chastised from adherents of either side.
I do not believe in quoting Squashed I was baring my own thoughts on this highly charged issue. So now I must wade in deeper in order to clarify but may just make the matter murkier.
First, while my default position is always to favor the flourishing of life, I am uncertain of when precisely, “life begins”. Defining it scientifically as the moment of conception does not aid the the discussion. Nor is the Bible (or other sacred religious texts) unambiguous on the matter. Many Christian conservatives argue arduously their anti-abortion stance but consider not their acquiescence to hypocrisy in their acceptance of birth control medication.
Legislative measures advocated by the so-called “pro-life” lobby I certainly do not support. In fact, I find their “pro-life” tag to be deeply problematic as typically this sort are the same sort that advocate for war, torture and exhibit a careless regard for the “least of these” not only in America, but to the poor and unprivileged across all the nations of planet Earth. Furthermore, absolutist restrictions on abortion, as increasingly pushed by state legislatures, equate to a “rapist bill of rights”, in my estimation.
Nor do I pledge affinity to the “pro-choice” crowd. While the “pro-life” forces make me cringe, outside of special circumstances, I am not in favor of “abortions for all” policy. I could wholeheartedly support an amendment to ban abortion (except for cases of incest or rape or in interest of the mother’s health, on a very “liberal” scale definition, which I realize to some pro-lifers, is quite rankling), if government-supported universal health care, full access to child care and law stipulating parental leave were also enacted in a legislative bargain. But I dare say that most conservatives value their economic shibboleths far greater than their devotion to the “sanctity of life”.
