One might play devil’s advocate and note that Romney is not really mocking the poor in this instance. You’d be right. He’s not mocking them; he’s just explicitly claiming that they don’t take responsibility for their lives. I imagine that’s quite a bit worse than a little mockery. And Christian principles are quite clear on this point: contempt for the poor equals contempt for God himself. Jesse Curtis
