On Methland by Nick Reding

abbyjean:

Methland: The Death and Life of an American Small Town by Nick Reding (via Amazon)

anyone read this/have thoughts on it? trying to decide whether to pick it up.

The internet fails me here, as (a) I wished to reply via Tumblr to this but that option is presently unavailable to me as that Tumblr action can only be performed via the Tumblr dashboard and the Tumblr dashboard search is not returning this post and (b) the weRead Facebook application, where I have logged the thousands of books I’ve read appears to be not functional since toggling my Facebook settings to render secure “https” pages.

IIRC, it is a good read, though there are factual aspects that have been challenged. The aforementioned Amazon thread has some comments where locals dispute some of Reding’s reporting and decry his depiction of their community.

And here is a NY Times review of the book, titled “Wasted Land”.
