Low prices, fast turnaround and lots of flaws

Good Devices Gone Bad

We might want to take a new look at manufacturing based on reliability and quality. Build products that are well-made and designed to last. Make them easier to repair or make it possible for others to fix them locally. Take seriously the environmental impact of all our throwaway technology.

This is not just endemic to iPhones and Kindles. Basically, most any of the Palm like minature computer devices have reliability issues. I stopped using Palm PDAs because they seemed to enjoy an average lifetime of 6 months, and the hassle of repairing|replacing them too much of a downer.

Though my iPhone is still in solid condition, and it is now 6 months old. Still, I’ve heard from far too many and their unpleasant iPod experiences to discount.

The real sin is all the waste generated. Even at optimum life, just about any personal computer, portable or desktop, is discarded after 2-3 years of use. Would be nice if they were constructed from recyclable components. But that might prohibitively price them.
