Competition in the modern societies has nothing to do with satisfying the basic needs of life. It has to do with social prestige, recognition in one’s own social class. Modern existential anxiety tells people: “You’re nothing if you don’t have anything – make something of yourself. If you don’t you will be despised and looked down on”; and so the struggle begins.
