27-inch 3.06GHz iMac Ordered

Thanks for all  the feedback in response to my Mac replacement dilemma.

A tough call, but I opted for the 2560x1440 27 inch iMac goodness.

Here is what it boiled down to:

  • Have access to a work MacBook Pro already, a 3+ year old machine, just like the personal MacBook Pro slotted for replacement. My work requisition for a new machine was denied, but it’s still serviceable and can adequately fill the role as mobile computing device. Though, increasingly, I’ve been ditching the laptop and bag for iPhone only mode at conferences. I accomplish little “real” work outside the office anymore anyway. And if need arises, will plop down a fraction of the cost of a new MacBook Pro for a Linux powered netbook. Or wait for the fabled Apple tablet release.
  • Been clamoring for a 30 inch Apple monitor ever since they entered the market, but employer refused the request and I’ve just not had the extra cash to justify home purchase. While of the computer user world has migrated to dual monitors (or open laptop + monitor), I’ve discovered such a setup to be too distracting — prefer a “one giant screen” approach. And the 2560x1440 resolution blows away the MBP display (or my 1680x1050 monitor).
  • As I stated in that “answer me” post, I’m still using a ~7 year old Apple Cinema Display, one of the original models that requires the use of a brick sized adapter to go from now defunct ACD connector to DVI. Probably no sweat to attach another Mini DisplayPort adapter, but that’s one adapter too many in that chain.

I reckon it all comes down to cost of monitor vs. cost of auxiliary laptop. I need a quality monitor for the desktop but my interests of mobile computing are, for the present time, easily satisfied with a cheap netbook that only needs to run Google Chrome and maybe a few other F/OSS applications.
