On Obama’s Health Care Reform Speech

Did not watch, but pored over the speech transcript, however.

I tend to agree with this assessment:

I think the speech tonight rescued Obama’s presidency. Health care reform? I’d say not so much.

As a tepid supporter thus far of the proposed plan to reform health care, er health insurance, a public option is paramount in my appraisal. Until this “public option” is fleshed out, my support is suspect to wavering.

I believe insurance companies are a big part of the problem, yet their role in the present state is not being critically dissected. Instead, they are targeted for a business boon, with legislation to mandate a requirement that all be insured. That model hasn’t exactly worked in the realm of auto insurance where many drive their automobiles without the legally mandated insurance.

I understand why we cannot have radical reform (i.e., single payer, universal health care) — anything that purges corporate structures that gainfully employ so many is beyond an impossible sell to Americans. However, without strict oversight and watchful regulatory measures, insurance companies will keep riding roughshod over patients. And costs will continue to rise.
