Ted Kennedy and the Duty to Rescue
…to Ted Kennedy’s killing of Mary Jo Kopechne…
Mr. Greenspun’s blog is littered with references to Kennedy’s “killing of Mary Jo Kopechne” and blasting of his role as a public servant.
I left a comment, expressing how his repeated statement of Kennedy as a “killer” a bit harsh — it was, after all, an accident, even if we agree that Kennedy’s actions in the aftermath were cowardly. He did not intend to kill her and from what I’ve heard, felt great remorse for his ill deed.
There was no namecalling or profanity in my comment post. No flaming or trolling. Just an honest comment on the author’s rather inflammatory post. But the comment was instantly deleted, without any notification or reason. Why? I cannot tell you why, except that it looks like Mr. Greenspun has a more selective comment acceptance filter than the average blogger.
This method of silencing feedback enrages me, I admit. Now, I can see the need for moderation if there is excessive profanity, ad hominem attacks or off topic material (i.e., spam, solicitation, etc.). What it says to me is “My opinion is gospel, no dissenting viewpoints are to be tolerated”.
And this has happened before. Where I left what I thought was an innocent comment, totally in response to the posted article, yet it mysteriously vanishes, like a pizza in a college dormitory.
I own a copy of Mr. Greenpsun’s Philip and Alex’s Guide to Web Publishing and hitherto, have been a fan. No more after his transformation into blogger Nazi.
