The reason history needs to be reread is not merely that every generation must claim the right to begin writing world history over from scratch, nor that in particular the children of the bourgeois cannot get out of the nest without soiling it, but that at certain points there is specifiable good news about the human condition, the goodness or newness of which those who hitherto have been controlling the storytelling had not yet appropriated.
