Maniacal flag-waving is a well-known symptom of decline in great nations, from Rome in 400 AD to Britain in 1910. Our history shows that best results are achieved by a mixture of idealism, accountability, pragmatism, and adherence to truth telling. Fealty to these deep American (essentially Enlightenment) values will nearly always wind up serving the interests of the country, as well as our honor. David Brin ☀
