anyway, i'm wondering if you've heard about reddit/conde nast and prop 19 in california? specifically the campaign ads being quashed from being put on reddit by conde nast and then reddit turning around and putting the ads on the site for free.

My take on Reddit v. Conde Nast regarding Prop 19 in California?
First, wasn’t even aware of this, as Reddit is not a site I frequent, at least not since back in the early days (circa 2005-2006). Generally, I tend to keep away from Digg, Reddit, etc.… as I find the signal to noise ratio to be too unpleasant, plus, the truly insightful content will bubble up or is already present in at least one of my subscribed RSS feeds. On occasion, I will poke in on Hacker News, though, purely for developer tidings.
The Conde Nast stance is slightly surprising, but not completely shocking, given the propensity for major media conglomerates to eagerly accept governmental and corporate public service advertisements while rejecting spots from citizen groups. Immediately coming to mind are occurrences of American television networks rejecting ads for other drug decriminalization campaigns, pro marriage equality sponsors, PETA, and other progressive causes while accepting government produced public service announcements, anti-abortion messages and spots produced by controversial groups like Focus on the Family.
I have not investigated enough to know if this Conde Nast policy applies to all political ads or just selected ones that rub up against ownership whims. A cursory browsing indicates that this posture was enacted solely for this specific ad.
But bottom line is Conde Nast is free to accept or reject whatever ads they desire. And you and I are free to withdraw our patronage and support from such entities due to these objectionable deeds. For example, on the silly banner ads run here (purely for amusement value), I exercise editorial restraint and “block” the Google AdSense bot from delivering ads for Goldline or other flimflam operations.
